Types of Acne

Why is it important to know the type of acne we have? This scary and dreaded skin condition seems to plague a lot of people regardless of societal class or age brackets. Knowing the exact nature of the problem will allow us to find the best fitting solution. Now let us start with the different types of acne and its formation that we may possibly be dealing with.

Whiteheads. This is a result of a clogged pore with entrapped oil, dirt and bacteria. Clogging of the pores results from excess oil, dirt sticking on to the excess oil, as well as dead skin cells. Whiteheads are medically referred to as comedones.

Blackheads. The formation of blackheads is the same with whiteheads but in this case, the entrapped oil, dirt and bacteria are blocking the pores create an opening in the surface of the skin. The black discoloration is the skin’s natural pigments but in this case, the pigment is stuck on the lesion.

Papules. These small red or pink bumps are also soft to the touch. They do not have pus inside; they are just inflamed and can be painful.

Pimple or Zit. These are the red bump with white or yellow spot in the middle. These are the most common type we encounter. They are also known as pustules.

Nodular Acne. These types of acne are much larger than the usual pimple. These lesions are formed deeper than the skin’s surface. They are usually painful bumps that last for months and leave a scar.

Cystic Scar. They look very similar to nodular acnes. The only difference is that it is filled with pus.

Acne Fulminans. It is a common type of acne to male teenagers. It appears as ulcerated and inflamed acne forming deeply engraved scars.

Gram-Negative Folliculitis. This is a type of acne is developed as a side effect of long-term antibiotic acne medication. The acne formation is a combination of papules, pustules and cysts.

Acne Rosacea. It is a skin disorder most common in women in their 30s. It appears as a rash that can cause swelling. This skin irritation causes the formation of acne.

Rosacea Fulminans (Pyoderma Faciale). This skin condition is a severe Rosacea case. It is composed of red sore skin with a group of large nodules and pustules.

Acne Conglobata. This is the most severe type of acne. It is composed of a numerous interconnected lumps of nodules, pustules and cysts.
