Acne Vulgaris

What is Acne Vulgaris? It’s itchy and achy sometimes but most of all it is so unsightly! Having this kind of problem is such a difficult setback to anyone. It can affect our work, our social life and even our self-esteem. It is because the world we live in values the visual aesthetic aspects of everything, more than anyone can imagine. This phenomenon is drawing more attention to information about damaging skin disease called acne vulgaris. What exactly is it and why do we get it? Those details are exactly what you will find out in this article.

The meaning of the term acne vulgaris gives you the hint from the name itself. It’s vulgarly visible.  It is the obviously visible-by-the-naked-eye kind of acne. The scary group of red and inflamed bumps, which is usually present around the forehead, cheeks and the jaw area. It can also appear at the upper back and chest area.

Acne is caused by a few inter-related factors. The first major contributor that triggers acne is excess oils. When our skin becomes too dry, the skin produces more oil as its natural reaction.

Hormonal changes can also contribute in the over production of excess oils. The adverse effect of excess oil or sebum in our skin is that it promotes the growth of acne causing bacteria called Propionibacterium acnes.

Another thing is that oily skin acts as an adhesive agent for dirt, which blocks the pores. Oil plus dirt equates to comedones.

Comedones are the blackheads and milias. They initially do not swell or look inflamed but these comedones that block the pores is also a good breeding ground for bacteria. This is why blackheads, pinheads and milias get inflamed and turn into big red acnes when you pick them. When you pick them, the skin around it becomes damaged, which triggers the skin to produce more oil. And as mentioned earlier, oily areas of the skin attract a colony of acne-causing bacteria and they proliferate in it causing inflammation which finally creates acne vulgaris.

Another action that triggers the production of more oil is the use of harsh chemicals and compounds, which irritates the skin. Irritation causes the skin to produce more oil and yet again, creates clusters of the acne bacteria.

Knowledge about the root-cause of the problem is the main weapon and defence against it. I hope that these details about acne give you a better understanding about the matter and enable you to device an effective and suited plan against Acne Vulgaris.
