IPL – How Does It Work As An Acne Treatment?

Aside from topical treatments, IPL is now getting more and more popular among people suffering from acne. Since it is also an effective treatment against acne, I would like to share with you a few information how this procedure works.

What is IPL? Intense Pulse Light works in a similar way as a laser treatment. The only difference is that IPL uses more wavelengths instead of just one. One of the wavelengths kills acne bacteria and another is used to prevent over-production of oil by the sebaceous glands. IPL systems commonly use filters, which enhances the skin’s absorption of light without using excessive level of energy. It is also a non-evasive procedure with very minimal downtime.

How is it done? Before the procedure, you will be asked to put on a pair of protective goggles. A thick layer of chilled gel is applied on the area that needs treatment. The gel is used to cool the skin and guide the light during the process. A short pulse of light is released in to the skin using a gadget called light applicator. There is a very little sting with each pulse, which is totally bearable according to people who have tried this simple procedure. The applicator is then moved to the other part of the skin that is being treated. The usual treatment duration is 30 minutes. Although almost anyone can take the procedure, please consult your dermatologist to determine if it’s right for you.

What happens after the treatment? After the procedure, the treated skin will be reddish with a warm sensation. The area will be lighter than the untreated part and it is possible to experience a permanent hair loss in the area.  You obviously will need to reconsider treating areas of your skin that has hair on it, especially for men.

When do my pimples disappear? It will take at least 5 – 6 IPL treatments fortnightly along with chemical peels in between to start seeing dramatic results. This may vary depending on a person’s case. The treatment can be very effective against acne provided that you continuously do the treatment in a recommended number of sessions advised by your dermatologist.

IPL is one of the many treatments you can choose from to cure acne. It does take a lot of time, effort, resources and even emotional stress to spend before you can find the right treatment that will work well with your acne case and I hope that this article along with the other ones in Acnezine Review help you.
